Duterte-Aquino or Miriam-Duterte in 2016?

September 11, 2014 Philippine Local News

President Aquino and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte may form a Duterte-Aquino tandem in the 2016 presidential elections.

This was bared yesterday by sources close to the city mayor who said that the President and Duterte seriously talked about their political plans for 2016 when the Chief Executive visited Davao City last Monday.

President Aquino was in Davao City as keynote speaker at the launching of the Inclusive Agribusiness Program of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) last Monday at the SMX Convention Center in SM Lanang. Duterte, however, was not at the launching.

While talks about the Duterte-Aquino tandem are spreading in Davao City, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago is toying with the idea of running for president in 2016 and eyeing the Davao City mayor as her running mate.

“I would love to run with Rudy Duterte. I love it from the very beginning but he himself said he will not run for public office, although I’m not sure whether he makes up his mind,” Santiago said.

“He might be an excellent vice president for enforcement because our number one problem now is corruption and number two, peace and order,” she added.

She said Duterte is an ideal vice president, not only for her, but also for anybody who will run for president.

At a press conference, Santiago said she will also consider as running mate former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Sen. Grace Poe Llamanzares.

Meanwhile, among those who confirmed the talks between the President and Duterte was Barangay Captain Mar Masanguid, head of the Duterte for President 2016 Movement.

“Nagstorya si Mayor (Duterte) ug si Presidente (Aquino) sa posibilidad nga mag vice (president) si PNoy kay Mayor (Mayor Duterte and President Aquino talked about the possibility of the Chief Executive to run as vice president of Duterte),” Masanguid told the media last Tuesday.

Masanguid based his confirmation from his own sources from the mayor’s camp and Malacañang.

“I received calls on this matter from insiders in Mayor Duterte’s camp and from Malacañang,” Masanguid said.

Should the Duterte-Aquino tandem push through, Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, the perceived presidential bet of the Liberal Party, will be left out.

Roxas was with the President at the launching of the PBSP inclusive agribusiness program.

“Unsay mahitabo kay Roxas (What will happen to Roxas)”, an employee told the Manila Bulletin when asked about her comment on the recent talks on Duterte-Aquino tandem.
