Miriam: I can beat Binay in 2016

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago has changing views about the presidency, saying she has yet to finally decide if she will run for president in 2016.

In a Facebook post, Santiago bared what will make her seek the presidency yet again after failing twice in 1992 and 1998.

“When I was young, I thought it would be fun to be president. Now that I am in middle age, I think it would be supremely hard work. So I need to build up my stamina,” she said.

Santiago earlier said she may run for president in 2016 if she beats stage 4 lung cancer by the end of the year.

She said she will run for president as long as there are enough “like-minded” supporters such as constitutionalist Joaquin Bernas.

The senator also said in a recent TV interview that she cannot ignore the clamor of many people who are urging her to run.

“This is noticeable in social media. I cannot turn my back, I am not deaf. I have many, many misgivings. One is my health. Can I stand it? Can my health bear it?” she said in a GMA-7 interview.

Asked if she can beat Vice President Jejomar Binay in the 2016 election, she said: “Oh yes, definitely. Kasi sa atin question lang yan kung meron kang pera.”

Santiago said she is not afraid of any potential candidate in the 2016 polls, noting that she will give any candidate a “good run for their money.”

“Wala akong kinakatakutan. Kung bastusan, masasagot ko sila. English pa, yung kanila Tagalog lang,” she added.

If elected president, Santiago said she would like to address the plight of overseas Filipino workers who leave the country for better paying jobs abroad.

“Sana makagawa ako ng paraan na kikita kayo dito sa Pilipinas at di na kailangan mag-sakripisyo abroad. Samantala, as president I would immediately task the labor department to give me a list of countries where the most number of Filipino workers are located, so that I can negotiate better terms with these states,” she said in her Facebook account.

She also said she has plans to help Filipino scientists by pouring more resources into research and development.

Asked about her thoughts on fighting corruption if elected president, she said: “The president should be honesty itself; but in addition she’ll need the virtues of bravery and selflessness.”

She also told a Twitter follower her favorite brand of red lipstick.

“I’m amused you noticed. I use Ever Bilena, because I want to support local brands, and precisely because it’s long-wearing.”
