[WATCH] PH must be open to gay civil unions: Robredo

Liberal Party vice presidential bet Leni Robredo on Wednesday said the Philippine government must be open to discussing the possibility of allowing gay civil unions in the predominantly Catholic Philippines.

”Sa akin, dapat ang gobyerno open na tingnan ang civil unions. Hindi yung marriage sa simbahan kasi para sa akin primordial pa rin ang religious beliefs. Hindi natin pwedeng pakialam iyon, pero yung civil unions sa gobyerno, dapat open sila doon,” she said in a DZMM interview.

Robredo, who co-authored an anti-discrimination bill in Congress, said more needs to be done to prevent discrimination and abuse against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

“Talagang nakakalungkot ang reality sa society na marginalized pa talaga ang LGBT. Dapat ang gobyerno ay mag-go out of its way, maghanap ng solusyon na out of the box, gumawa ng maraming programa,” she said.
