Nike made its decision following controversial comments Pacquiao made about same-sex marriage, where he compared gay couples to animals. Pacquiao, a senatorial bet for the United Nationalist Alliance, apologized for the comment, but maintained that he remained against same-sex marriage.

That did not stop Nike from terminating the relationship, calling Pacquiao’s comments “abhorrent.”
Pacquiao, meanwhile, said he respected Nike’s decision, while noting that their endorsement deal had expired and that Nike was only a clothing sponsor for him.
