[REPOST] ‘Super Parental Guardians’ now PH’s highest grossing local film

Vice Ganda’s “The Super Parental Guardians” has become the country’s highest grossing local film of all time, according to Star Cinema executive Roxy Liquigan.

The comedy blockbuster overtook another Vice Ganda flick, 2015’s “Beauty and the Bestie,” on its fifth week in cinemas.

The announcement, which did not include an exact ticket sales figure, was made three days after it was revealed that the movie has grossed more than P500 million, the only Filipino film to do so this year.

It is still showing in more than 70 provincial theaters.

“Beauty and the Bestie” now sits in second place after ending its run with a P526 million worldwide gross. An entry to last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), much of its earnings were from the the two weeks when Metro Manila cinemas were required by law to screen only local films.

The success of “The Super Parental Guardians” caps off a banner year for Star Cinema, which saw the production outfit churn out box office hit one after another. Eight movies from Star Cinema this year have crossed the P100 million mark.

“Barcelona: A Love Untold,” which starred Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, was the studio’s second highest grosser with a P320-million take.

Also featuring Coco Martin, “The Super Parental Guardians” made headlines after it was excluded from this year’s MMFF, forcing Star Cinema to release it last November 30, three weeks before the start of the film festival.

It was directed by Joyce Bernal and also stars child actors Awra Briguela and Simon “Onyok” Pineda, who have enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame following their stints on the hit primetime show “Ang Probinsyano” with Coco Martin.

Responding to the news that his movie is now the most successful local film of all time in the Philippines, Vice Ganda wrote on Twitter: “Nag-Vatican kang ako kahapon. Tapos natulog. Pag gising ko may ganito na. Iba din talaga to si Lord e. Ginagalingan din talaga!”

The comedian is currently in Europe with his family for a short vacation.
