[WATCH] Mariah Recovers From Supposed ‘Vocal Disaster’ in Second Night of Tour

October 7, 2014 Showbiz News

Mariah Carey received flak the other day from people who saw the first night of “The Elusive Chanteuse Show” in Tokyo, saying the world’s best vocalist was in a disappointing vocal shape the whole time.

Fans posted 15-second clips on Instagram showing Mariah struggling to hit notes in songs like “Hero” and “Emotions.” We’re talking about money notes which she would normally have no problems engaging in.

Fans and critics blogged about the unfortunate incident—from reputable names like Billboard.com to gossip sites like PerezHilton.com.

BUT.

The second night of the concert series in Yokohama proved the naysayers wrong. Mariah was in fine vocal shape. Her vocals weren’t in their best condition, but Mariah didn’t sound jetlagged at all. Fans in Yokohama definitely got their money’s worth if the subsequent videos on YouTube and Instagram are to be believed. See some video clips below. (Thanks @abbeytine)

Maybe it helped that Mariah only sang 20 songs during the second night, as opposed to 23 in Tokyo. Perhaps she had better sleep or had recovered from whatever throat infection she had. Perhaps “dembabies” didn’t wake her up last night like they did the night before the first show.

Whatever the reason is for Mariah’s better vocal performance, it only meant one thing. That Mariah is a trooper. It ain’t easy to go out on stage with thousands of fans screaming at you knowing you’re not at your best state. Yet she did. And she was warm, and funny, and beautiful—as always.

Mariah’s voice, even during that unfortunate first night, was still there. She had a beautiful tone. The timbre of her voice in tact, especially on the Billie Holiday cover “Don’t explain.”

If Mariah has read the negative reviews, I hope she takes it as a challenge to better herself. Hopefully, the blogosphere calms down a bit and gives Mariah the break she deserves. Nobody’s perfect, after all, not even the world’s most celebrated diva.

Mariah is Mariah, so be prepared to get a comeback only a true vocalist of her caliber can deliver come October 28, during the Manila leg of Mariah’s “The Elusive Chanteuse Show” at the Mall of Asia Arena.
