July 3, 2015 Philippine Local News

A magnitude 6.1 quake struck off the province of Surigao del Norte Friday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The epicenter of the quake was recorded 41 kilometers northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte at 2:43 p.m, said Phivolcs.

Intensity V (strong) was felt in Surigao City; Siargao Island; Talacogon, Agusan del Sur; and Carrascal, Surigao del Sur. Intensity IV (moderately strong) was felt in Dinagat Island.

According to Phivolcs, when the intensity is level 5, the quake is felt by most people indoors and outdoors. “Hanging objects swing violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably. Shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable.”

When the intensity is level IV, Phivolcs said: “Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak.”

Meanwhile, Intensity III (weak) was felt in San Juan, Southern Leyte; Tacloban, Leyte; Palo, Leyte; and Lapu-lapu City. Intensity II was felt in Bislig, Surigao del Sur; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; and Davao City.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 30 kilometers, Phivolcs added.

Damage is not expected from the quake, Phivolcs said, but aftershocks are likely.
