PNoy believes there’s still time for charter change during his term

September 17, 2014 Philippine Local News

Speaking in front of Filipinos gathered at the 11th-century Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino III has once again shown conflicting decisions regarding the charter change issue.

According to a report on the Inquirer, the president said there is still time left in his term to push the charter change, but clarified that he is still not trying to make it happen in the soonest time possible. He wants to feel the pulse of the people, whether they still want him to become the president after his term ends.

The president also said the decision will ultimately be ruled by what his own conscience would tell him about the matter.

With two years left as head of state, he said there is still time to change the constitution so he would be allowed to run a second term. Nothing is impossible to someone who really wants something, the president quipped. He added that there’s always a way to change the constitution to give him the chance to run a second term, as long as the vast majority wants that to happen, the Inquirer also reported.

President can’t make up mind

Ever since the issue of the constitutional amendment has resurfaced during his term, the president has made conflicting statements about the matter. There were many instances when he said he would willingly step down in 2016 and not run for office anymore, but there were also moments, same as the one that happened in Belgium, when he would muse about a second term if the people wish for him to run for the office.

In August, we previously reported how he clarified he is open to charter change for term extensions, but not during his own term. Just last week, he had joked about the matter, saying he hopes his successor would not be himself, yet he changes his mind yet again.
