It’s the senator’s advice to the singer, who got a death threat via Twitter after he criticized Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Senator Nancy Binay said her family does not know the person who threatened singer Jim Paredes on the social networking site Twitter and has nothing to do with the tweet.
“Porke ba’t pinagtatanggol ang ating Vice President kami na ang nagthe-threaten sa kanya?” Binay told reporters on Monday, October 27.
Twitter threat
Paredes filed a complaint before the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Division over an alleged death threat tweeted to him.
Paredes said the threat came from a certain Rex Vincent Tecson (a.k.a. Rex Bentulan Tecson) after he posted a tweet criticizing Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Paredes had tweeted: “Binay’s decision not to attend the hearings and all his moves after that have been utterly disastrous. It seems he has everyting to hide.” Tecson then responded with this tweet: “Ikaw Mr. @Jimparedes Aalamin namin ang Bahay mo dyan sa Manila. SALVAGE ang Aabutin mo. Sa Oras Mag-Mention ka pa Uli kay @VPjojoBinay.”
According PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group Intelligence and Investigation Chief Jay Guillermo, Paredes had the incident recorded on their blotter at around 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 23.
Nancy shares her social meadia ‘strategy’
Senator Binay, who was often criticized on social media during the 2013 senatorial elections for her lack of experience in public office, also offered advice to Paredes in dealing with Twitter bashers.
She said, “I’ve been bashed. I’ve been threatened on social media. If you participate sa mundo na ‘yon, I think dapat hindi ka sensitive, matibay ang loob mo.”
Paredes’ point
Paredes earlier said he is not linking the threat by Tecson to any politician.
He said he reported the death threat to the PNP “because threats of death or injury online should be taken seriously.”
He added: “We may all argue and be poles apart and may even have heated discussions about issues, but the moment insults and threats enter the picture, that’s the time we lose all civility. I would rather block you than continue.”
