With the pork barrel scam capturing the nation’s attention for months now, this is one story angle that nobody saw coming.
As alleged pork barrel mastermind Janet Lim Napoles’ return to Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna got delayed due to her vaginal bleeding, reports questioning the cause of her condition surfaced.
Wild rumors
Some of those reports alleged that the bleeding was being faked by the Napoles camp, an allegation that they promptly dismissed.
However, there were also allegations that Napoles’ bleeding was caused by intimate contact.
On Friday, May 23, Atty. Bruce Rivera, Napoles’ lawyer, spoke to ANC’s Top Story and denied the rumor that his client had sex inside her room at the Ospital ng Makati, which caused her to suffer vaginal bleeding and prevented her from going back to jail.
Intimacy is impossible
Rivera stated, “It is a fantastic and even a metaphysical claim because in the first place, what happened was the prosecution asked if it is possible that sex or intimate contact would have caused bleeding. So the doctors said it can be possible because siyempre if there is a wound and there is sex, then it can cause bleeding. But the doctors were very clear that there was no physical contact.”
Rivera also added that doctors and nurses are always going in and out of Napoles’ room, which would have made any intimate contact for Napoles impossible.
Moreover, Rivera said guards are stationed outside Napoles’ room, and a relative of the family, including Mr. Napoles, is always present.
Credibility attacked?
Rivera theorized that the “sex” factor is meant to undermine Napoles’ credibility. He said he will ask Napoles’ doctors to issue a written clarification about what they actually said.
Napoles, the alleged mastermind in the pork barrel scam, has been in the hospital since last month for a hysterectomy.
She was scheduled to be transferred back to Fort Sto. Domingo on May 23, but Judge Elmo Alameda suspended his order after doctors said it was best if she stayed in the hospital so the bleeding could be controlled.
When Napoles’ bleeding problem was first brought up, Rivera had said, “Doctors told her it’s not normal for her to be bleeding because she has no uterus anymore. Of course, the timing was unfortunate and we wouldnt want it this way. That’s the reason why we had [kept] it quiet (at first).”
