The small island nation of Haiti is having difficulty adapting to the soaring prices of food, since most of it has to be imported. In order to survive, some Haitians are resorting to eating mud cookies.

The cookies are made of dirt, butter and salt. They hold little nutritional value, but manage to keep their stomachs full.

The cookies aren’t sweet, are hard to swallow, and add almost no nutritional value.

The recipe has been passed down for generations in Haiti. Woman spend the entire day making them for their family and friends.

“When you haven’t eaten anything, the dirt fills your stomach”, one woman said.
