Colanggo received platinum record for album

MANILA (UPDATED) – Herbert Colanggo, one of the New Bilibid Prisons inmate whose cell was raided by authorities on Monday, shot a music video inside his luxurious quarters in the jail facility.

The nearly four-minute video of “Pa’no ‘Yon,” the carrier single of his Ivory Records-produced album “Kinabukasan,” is readily viewable on Colanggo’s YouTube page.

It shows Colanggo performing with a band at the music studio seen in media reports on the surprise inspection of the NBP’s maximum security compound.

Colanggo’s cell, the inspection found, is carpeted and has an air-conditioned second level which supposedly serves as the convicted robbery gang leader’s office.

Inspectors also found six expensive wrist watches in his cell.

The luxurious items in his quarters, Colanggo said, were donations, adding that officials of the Bureau of Corrections were well aware of them.

Colanggo is a convicted robbery gang leader who has been serving his 12- to 14-year sentence since 2009.

“Mga donation po ‘yon [mula] sa mga kaibigan, mga politician at lalo na ‘yung aking uncle,” he said, adding that the relative is a congressman.

He released “Kinabukasan” in March this year and tied with ABS-CBN actor Richard Yap in September as the New Male Recording Artist of the Year at the 6th Star Awards for Music.

A month after his album’s release, it got gold and platinum records, which were conferred on him during his charity concert inside the NBP.

At the time, Colanggo said he turned to music to show that inmates can be productive with the use of their skills and talents. His charity shows, he added, could serve as an inspiration to fellow inmates that they can still contribute something good to society despite their circumstance.

“So far ngayon marami na ang gumagaya po sa akin sa ginagawa ko, parang nahawahan ko na sila,” he sad in a PEP report published in May. “Isa iyan sa mga pangarap ko na kami ay makagawa ng mabuti at maganda dito sa loob.”

“Katulad ng album kong ‘Kinabukasan,’ may kinabukasan po kami. Sabi ko sa kanila, hindi tayo mawalan ng pag-asa, may pag-asa po tayo na itong dilim na ito ay may liwanag pa. Tayo ay gagawa ng mabuti at hindi na magloloko pa.”
