September 30, 2014 Philippine Local News

A newborn baby was rescued in time at a university toilet in China after a student tried to flush it down the toilet and left the child for dead. Luckily, ‘though, some students heard its muffled cry and sounded the alarm.

The incident took place inside a student dormitory at a university in the city of Linyi in Shandong province last September 14 around 5:00 am.

Rescuers rushed to the scene after receiving a call about a baby girl stuck inside a toilet drain pipe of the university. They found the newborn wedged in an elbow of a 20-centimeter pipe between the third and the fourth floor toilet. It was covered with tissues, but still breathing.

From how it looked, someone must have tried unsuccessfully to flush the baby, but the water didn’t help. Police suspected the mother is a young high school student in the university and must be scared that she has to dispose of her child.

After removing the tissue to allow the baby to breath some air, rescuers proceeded to cut the pipe from the floor below. They then pushed the child up until someone managed to pull her out safely.

It took almost three hours for the rescuers to free the poor baby who was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities have since tracked the mother, but have yet to decide whether to press charges or not.

Meanwhile, the shocking incident has sparked outrage among Chinese netizens on Weibo.

Some have blamed China’s one-child policy which may have prompted the young mother to abandon the baby girl because a boy is normally preferred. Many, however, slammed the young mother for lack of values.

“I find the image of a young woman giving birth in the toilet, cleaning herself up and then going back to her room to carry on studying a particularly worrying one and a sign of the sort of throwaway society that we live in now days,” one wrote on Weibo.
