After drinking up most of the contents in his cup of McDonald’s coffee, Ron Morais was surprised to find a dead mouse at the bottom when he took the lid off. He later told CBC News that he felt queasy after seeing the mouse inside the cup because he had drank the coffee in which it was soaked.
According to Morais, he always takes off the lid of his coffee so he could drink the last drop inside the cup. It came as a nasty surprise that this particular cup had a dead mouse at the bottom. He also said there were mouse droppings inside, something he didn’t notice while he was still drinking the cup’s contents.
Morais clarified that he is not suing McDonald’s for his nasty coffee or looking for some kind of compensation from the fastfood chain; however, he shared his story so that the chain can check its food handling practices to prevent this incident from happening again to any of its customers.
His reason for not suing McDonald’s is particularly down-to-earth: he is in a much better shape than the mouse; thus, there’s no need to make a big deal out of it and sue the company. However, he said he wants an explanation as to how the mouse ended up in his cup.
Inspection of local franchise
After learning of Morais’ find, McDonald’s immediately conducted a thorough inspection of its local franchise in Canada where the man bought his coffee. The Canadian Department of Health also conducted a separate investigation on the matter but found that all food was sealed inside the chain and there was no evidence of pests, reports The Independent.
A representative from McDonald’s said they have called up Morais to obtain the coffee with the dead mouse. McDonald’s communications manager for the eastern region said the chain takes allegations of sanitation and cleanliness issues seriously, especially because food safety is ‘top priority’ for them.
It is not clear whether the company will sue Morais for trying to ruin their reputation if they can prove the mouse did not come from the store.
